Editorial Review:

Amazon.com Product DescriptionGrab onto a piece of history with Wilson's official NFL game ball--The Duke--which is dedicated to football legend Wellington 'Duke' Mara. More than just a piece of memorabilia, The Duke is designed with the serious competitor in mind, with genuine hand-sewn, Tanned in Tack leather for superior playability and grip, and 3-ply VPU bladder for maximum durability and air retention. Other features include double lacing, the official NFL seal in gold, and Commissioner Roger Goodell signature stamp.

The return of The Duke.
Wellington 'The Duke' Mara passed away in October, 2005 at the age of 89 after dedicating 81 years to the New York Giants as an administrator, owner, and unwavering booster. In 1940, heeding the advice of influential team owners Tim Mara of the New York Giants and George Halas of the Chicago Bears, the NFL selected Wilson as the league's official football supplier. The following year, Wilson introduced a redesigned football and named it 'The Duke' in honor of Mara's son, Wellington. The Duke stayed in play for nearly three decades until the NFL and AFL merged in 1969.

Customer Reviews
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Great to have the real deal, but composite footballs are more fun to throw
When I bought this football, I already had an NFL-sized composite football that I loved to throw around. I liked the idea, though, of having a leather football--just like the ones used in the games--that I could keep for years.

After receiving the ball, I was surprised how slick and hard the ball was compared to the composite ball. I have reasonably large hands, and it is sufficiently more difficult to grip the ball. It is also a little tough on the hands when catching it. I hope it breaks in a little.

Nevertheless, I am still glad that I bought the ball. Owning it is almost like owning a piece of sporting history.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Football
I bought this football about 6 months ago, and it has held up pretty good. I agree, you must have medium-large hands to throw this. It is easy to catch, and you will not drop as many passes. It is somewhate hard to run with though. It holds up very nice, it has no real signs of wear. I recommend it. It takes a while to get used to, but what you do it will be worth it. If you throw right, it will launch a perfect spiral. You can usually hit at least 35 yards, and more if you are stronger. It stays pumped well, and is easy to put air into. However, it is next to impossible to throw if the ball is wet or your hands are sweaty {I was playing a game where it started to rain, I could barely throw it}

Still a good buy.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Hard and slick - may be good for some things but not footballs
I'm in charge of a weekly touch football game where we use an official NFL football from a previous year and I wanted to get another one for backup. I know 'The Duke' is supposed to be the official NFL ball from this year, but there seems to be something wrong with the balls Amazon is shipping.

The first ball I got from Amazon was hard as a rock, slick as all get out and had poor stitching in the laces. I got a second one and the stitching was a bit better, but it was still hard and slippery. And when it was exposed to rain, the ball stained the hands of everyone who touched it with red coloring. I have no clue if that's to be expected or not since it's all leather but it seems odd.

In any case, you can grip the ball with a good pair of sticky football gloves, which also help mitigate the pain of catching the ball. So, it is usable and throws a nice spiral but maybe I play ball with a bunch of wussies cuz no one else wants to get near that thing out of fear of breaking their hands (which is kind of annoying given how much i paid for the balls).

Maybe the footballs just need to be broken in, but I'm not really sure how to do that aside from playing with them, which no one seems to want to do. I've tried to let some air out to make the things more user-friendly, but it doesn't really help.

Anyway, I find it really hard to believe this is the ball the NFL played with this year. Something about them just seems cheaply made. In any case, I suggest you save some money and go with a decent composite leather ball.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My Football
My Wilson F1100 Official NFL Game Football arrived days before it was scheduled to and in excellent condition. I would like to thank you for the fast shipping and the good quality of this product.

I would, also, like to see you open up a line of hand-sewn NFL team logo patches. I think that would be a good collector's item.

Your satisfied customer,
David Ewing

I've heard it said by Dave Winer and many many others: if only Dean had reinvested half the money raised into the Internet, then ...

OK, so you're the Dean Campaign Chief Information Officer in August 2003. The money starts to roll in. $20 million over six months, $2-4 million per month.

What would you spend the money on?

  1. What does your monthly budget look like?
  2. What is your application and infrastructure portfolio?
  3. How much will you allocate to maintenance?
  4. You're building from scratch, so what problems do you hope to avoid through wise architecture?
  5. What are your big milestones?
  6. Who are your key vendors?

How do you spend in consonance with the campaign strategy?

  1. How will you use the Internet to bring offline voters into the campaign at the same numbers as radio or television broadcasts?
  2. What is your online strategy for responding to attack ads and opposition pundits in radio, television and print?
  3. Online community takes time to build and is very hard to organize geographically. What will you do to match the state-by-state primary schedule?
  4. What can you do with online services to serve the campaign in caucus states?
  5. You are preparing for Bush to launch in Spring 2004. What are your countermeasures to reach out to moderate Republicans online while the GOP uses its advanced voter email systems to barrage 200 million validated email addresses?
  6. How will you lower the cost-per-vote vs. the GOP?
